A Summer Activity for Mentors and Younger Mentees
By Joyce Fangman, Creative Mentoring
Trainer

As the end of the school year approaches, you and your mentee should begin discussing how you’ll handle the summer break. Here is a really fun and education activity for you to try.

Find a copy at the library or purchase your own copy of Flat Stanley by Jeff Brown. This is a thin paperback book for children 7 through 9 years of age. Younger students can also enjoy being read this book as well. The story is about a boy whose bulletin board falls off the wall while he is sleeping and flattens him. Stanley is fine, only flat! Flat Stanley is able to do unusual things such as being mailed in an envelope, flown like a kite, and even becomes a hero. There are even sequels to this book for you to read.

Elementary students across America and now even across the world, are participating in some very unique geography and journal writing experiences using Flat Stanley. You and your mentee can create your very own “Flat Stanley” adventures.

1. Read the book together and discuss his adventures. Make two “Flat Stanleys”—one for you and one for your mentee. Be sure to cut out 2 images of Flat Stanley since you will need to have a front and back. Glue or paste Flat Stanley onto poster board, or a piece of cardboard. Use markers or crayon to draw eyes, nose, mouth, shirt, pants, shoes, and to color hair.

2. Discuss what you’ll do with your Flat Stanleys. You can each keep a diary of Flat Stanley’s visits, vacations, and other summer activities. Take or draw pictures of your Flat Stanleys visiting new places and meeting new friends. You may also wish to send your mentee a postcard from the places your Flat Stanley visits.

3. One neat thing about Stanley being “flat” is that you can mail him to a friend or relative in another state. Send a letter introducing him to them. Ask your host family to take Flat Stanley with them to work, or on vacation. Encourage them to send a letter that details Flat Stanley’s trip. Also ask them to take a picture of the family including Flat Stanley. When he returns…and you return to school in the fall, you and your mentee can have lots of fun sharing the stories about where your Flat Stanleys went and what they did over the summer!
